* A bicyclist was killed in a horrific accident in Harlem, according to police. The rider, a 27-year-old male, was in in the bicycle lane on East 120th Street about 20 feet before the intersection with 3rd Avenue at about 8 a.m. when tragedy struck. That's when the driver of a parked 2008 Honda opened his car door, knocking the cyclist down into the street, police said. Then, the rider was hit and killed by a passing Hino box truck, driven by a 50-year-old man, police said. Paramedics responded and the cyclist was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police said there were no signs of criminality, but the truck driver was issued five summonses for equipment violations and the driver of the Honda was given a summons for "unsafe exiting a vehicle." The investigation is ongoing and the cyclist's name was not released pending family notification, police said. In September, a similar accident claimed the life of 23-year-old bicyclist who was struck by a bus after being hit by a car door in Brooklyn. The woman killed this weekend in Brooklyn when her bicycle clipped the door of a parked car - launching her into a city bus - rode her bike everywhere, co-workers said. * The young women, 23, who died in the freak accident Saturday night in Prospect Heights, worked as a barrista at Think Coffee on Mercer St. in Manhattan. She rode her bike to work every day, co-workers said, and always wore a helmet. "She was a nice girl. It's a tragedy," said a neighbor who lived near the apartment Herron sublet on Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn. Another women, 24, of Staten Island, opened the door of her car just as the victim rode past on Atlantic Ave. The door struck the victoms bike and propelled her into the path of the bus, police said. Francis immediately called 911, then returned to a family party she was attending just steps away from the scene to seek comfort from family members, a police source said. Francis was charged with operating a vehicle without a license.k.Cycling advocates have sued to force the state to pave over rumble strips carved into a 4.4-mile stretch of Route 100 in Yorktown and Somers - a favorite stretch for bike riders. The state Department of Transportation installed the strips to protect motorists, cyclists and joggers along the road, but the Westchester Cycle Club argues that they were a misguided measure that actually forces people pedaling along the road into traffic on the stretch between routes 118 and 35.(Phelps, N.Y) -- A man from Ontario County is now in satisfactory condition at Strong Memorial Hospital after he was hit by a car while riding his bike on Sunday. The man, who police did not identify, was riding north at 1:22 p.m., when he hit the rear passenger door of a vehicle turning left into the parking lot of Lillian's restaurant, Lt. Matthew Veitch said. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Veitch said. The operator of the vehicle, who police would only say is from Vermont, will likely face charges of failing to yield the right of way, police said. "The investigation is ongoing and charges are anticipated," Veitch said.A bicyclist was struck and killed by and oversized,18 wheel, tractor trailer truck at the intersection of 6th Avenue and 30th Street. The bicycle messenger was struck by a tractor trailer hauling freight for the Aulenbak Company of New Jersey. (Measurements performed at the scene by Transportation Alternatives with a measuring wheel calibrated to tenths of feet) found that the tractor trailer combination was approximately 60 feet long. New York City law prohibits tractor trailer combinations exceeding 55 feet. It is not known if the size of the truck contributed to the crash. However, it is known that larger trucks take longer to brake and have larger blind spots in which the driver cannot observe pedestrians and bicyclists.
